NASA has been working creating planes powered by electricity only. The engineers at NASA’s Scalable Convergent Electronic Propulsion Technology Operations Research (SCEPTOR) have completely redesigned the aircraft, enabling them to increase its flight time.

Couple these advances with the recent flight of a solar powered plane that flew from Japan to Hawaii. The plane, called the Solar Impulse II use lithium-ion batters and is expected to start its “Round the World Solar Flight” in April 2016.

The generated electricity using solar cells only to power four electric motors.
